A Living
Tradition

Modern GOJU Karate traces its roots from post-war Japan through the pioneering dojos of New York to the heart of Palm Bay, Florida.

1959
Peter Urban opens the first Japanese GOJU-Ryu dojo in the New York/New Jersey area after training in Japan.
1964
Sensei Urban breaks away to create "USA GOJU," a system based on his own beliefs and experiences.
1970s
Vincent DeMarco, also a student of Urban's, founds Modern GOJU and opens a dojo in Long Island, NY.
1980
Tom Smyth founds the Palm Bay dojo — today the oldest continuously operating dojo in South Brevard.
2012
Sensei Smyth passes the dojo to his student, William Wahne, who continues the tradition.
2014
Sensei Wahne affiliates the Palm Bay dojo with Soke Kenneth Nilsen and the Modern GOJU Network.
"In this style, it takes around 5 to 7 years of serious study to earn a black belt. You are tested every night you are in class." — Modern GOJU Philosophy

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

No. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean self-defense art and is distinct from Karate. Karate applies to Japanese or Okinawan-based forms of self-defense. Modern GOJU is rooted in the Japanese GOJU-Ryu tradition.
Every new student is required to buy a GI (pronounced "ghee") at the start of their training. You'll have until the second or third class to be measured and purchase one. Uniforms start at around $35 — speak with Sensei about ordering.
Sparring is an important part of training and begins after a student earns their first stripe on the white belt. This typically takes about 2 months, depending on the student's progress.
There is no set schedule for promotions. Students must demonstrate knowledge, hard work, and solid technique. You are observed and tested every class. In this style, earning a black belt takes roughly 5 to 7 years of serious study.
All students must purchase protective head, hand, and feet pads, plus a mouth guard. Male students also need a groin protection cup, and female students should have a protective sports bra. Equipment must be purchased upon promotion to 9th kyu.
Occasionally! We train with break-away boards — plastic boards designed to separate upon impact and be reassembled for repeated use.
Bowing is a sign of respect — to your fellow students, instructors, and the dojo itself. Students bow when entering and leaving the training area, before and after working with a partner, and after speaking with a Sensei. Silence in class ensures everyone can hear and learn.
